Dale Treadwell with some school children
Crann Schools Programme
On behalf of Crann – Trees for Ireland, Dale Treadwell, ecologist, who has appeared many times on children’s TV, carried out numerous school projects for us over the years.
He has passed the baton on to James Lowry, a primary school teacher, who also has the ability to relate to children and get them genuinely interested in wildlife and the benefits trees bestow on us all.
Following the classroom biodiversity workshop, the students themselves plant the saplings and/or hedgerow plants with James. This is primarily a fun element where the children will learn, almost without realising it, how valuable the trees are to themselves and the wonders of the natural world.
This enables the school to create or enhance a school garden or create a mini-woodland which becomes an outdoor classroom and a very valuable asset for many subjects in the curriculum. We find that this method of environmental education is a very successful and practical way of getting the message across to the young adults of tomorrow!
